Ethereum Moves Closer to Pectra Upgrade with ‘Hoodi’ Testnet

Ethereum developers have taken another step toward finalizing the long-awaited Pectra upgrade by launching the Hoodi testnet. This comes after challenges in previous testnets, Holesky and Sepolia, which delayed the initial rollout planned for late 2024.

Why Hoodi Matters

Set to launch on March 17, Hoodi aims to resolve critical issues found in earlier test phases. Ethereum Foundation developer Tim Beiko confirmed that the Pectra activation on Hoodi is scheduled for March 26. If the test runs smoothly, developers may set a mainnet launch date as early as April 25, just 30 days after activation.

Key Features of Pectra

The Pectra upgrade integrates elements from the Prague and Electra proposals, bringing over 10 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). These include:

  • Enhanced wallet functionality for a better user experience.
  • Scaling improvements by doubling the blob count for data availability (from 3 to 6).
  • More flexibility in Ethereum staking operations to improve network efficiency.

These changes are expected to boost Ethereum’s scalability and reduce transaction costs, making it a significant upgrade for both users and developers.

Previous Delays and Challenges

Pectra’s deployment has faced multiple setbacks, mainly due to client readiness issues and synchronization bugs. The Sepolia testnet, which attempted to activate Pectra on March 5, ran into errors on geth nodes and produced empty blocks, prompting the need for Hoodi.

Developers designed Hoodi to better replicate Ethereum’s mainnet conditions, ensuring a smoother upgrade process before full-scale deployment.

Community Response and Market Implications

Ethereum’s community has had mixed reactions to the delays. While some users express frustration, others appreciate the cautious approach to avoiding critical failures.

If Pectra is successfully activated, it could have a positive impact on ETH prices, as investors anticipate improved network efficiency and scalability. However, traders should watch for potential market volatility leading up to the mainnet launch.
